01. Bailers

VOC vials typically require HCl preservation, organics call for amber glass, metals need acid-preserved plastic — and mixing these up means the lab can reject your samples before they even get to analysis. Pack and label your cooler before you leave the office, using pre-preserved containers from a reputable laboratory.
05. Field logbook and chain of custody forms
A perfect sample with incomplete documentation is legally and scientifically worthless. Your field logbook captures the observations that give context to your data — water levels, stabilization readings, field conditions, anomalies. Your chain of custody form is the paper trail that makes your results defensible in a regulatory or legal setting. Use waterproof field books, pre-printed COC forms, and permanent markers. Don’t rely on your phone alone.
